First Class
At the heart of the Anthroposophical Society is the School for Spiritual Science, an international institution based at the Goetheanum in Dornach, Switzerland. It functions as an esoteric school for spiritual scientific research, study, and personal growth, with sections in the areas of the social sciences, education, natural sciences, the arts, agriculture and medicine.
During the course of 1924, Rudolf Steiner held 19 esoteric lessons in which he introduced his students to a series of meditations (mantras) along with instructions and guidelines for their use. This set of lessons is known as the “First Class”, a path of schooling which provides a progressive meditative experience of spirituality in the world and within the human being, in keeping with an active, contemporary consciousness. It is a schooling of the Archangel Michael, the reigning spirit of our times.
Anthroposophical insights need time to get used to, and caution is called for when working with them. They need to mature in one’s heart and mind. For that reason, the General Anthroposophical Society has instituted the following prerequisites to apply for membership in the class: one must be familiar with Rudolf Steiner’s basic work, and have two years of membership in the Anthroposophical Society. Membership in the School of Spiritual Science and the First Class must never be entered into simply out of curiosity, but rather with a sense of earnestness and responsibility.
